At the 2019 Karachi Literature Festival, Journalist Umer Bin Ajmal expressed his gratitude for having a live recording of the great Zia Mohyeddin during a reading from four years prior. The Great Legendary Zia Mohyeddin passed away at 6:15 am after a brief illness, as confirmed by Ambassador Salman Ahmad, who expressed great sadness and sorrow and asked for prayers for the late actor.

How Did Zia Mohiuddin Die?

Actor and filmmaker Zia Mohyeddin, who had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Karachi, passed away on Monday, February 13, after an internal arterial rupture during surgery. He was ill for several days before his death.

No further details regarding his death have been disclosed. Journalists Umer Bin Ajmal, Beena Sarwar, and Azhar Abbas expressed their gratitude for having had the opportunity to interact with the legendary artist during his lifetime.

Zia Mohiuddin, who was born in 1931 in Lyallpur, British India (now Faisalabad, Pakistan), received numerous accolades throughout his career. He excelled in his iconic role in Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 and hosted the stage program “Zia Mohiuddin Show.”

He received the Hilal Imtiaz in 2012 for his technical services. After graduating from Government College Lahore in 1949, Zia pursued further education in Australia and England. He enrolled in the Royal Academy of Theater and Arts in 1950, where he started singing and acting. He returned to Pakistan in 1956 but later went back to England on a scholarship to complete his director training.

Zia Mohiuddin, who captivated audiences with his portrayal of Dr. Aziz in EM Foster’s “A Passage to India” in 1960, also had a memorable role in the film “Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962.

He later appeared in numerous Hollywood movies and stage productions, and in 1970 he began hosting The Zia Mohiuddin Show for Pakistan Television.

In 2004, he was named the director of the National Academy of Performing Arts in Karachi, and he is one of the few Pakistanis to have worked in theater and film industries outside of Pakistan.
