The two were married on September 29, 1951, and received a plot of land near Streetsville as a wedding gift from Sam’s parents, which they moved to in December of that year.
Before Hazel’s entry into politics, she and Sam started The Streetsville Booster in 1964, a community newspaper that aimed to promote local businesses and events. While Hazel handled the political side of things, Sam took care of the business, and the couple worked together in perfect harmony.
Tragically, Sam McCallion passed away in 1997 due to Alzheimer’s disease, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion to his wife, family, and community.

Hazel McCallion’s remarkable journey began when she left the corporate world in 1967 to pursue a career in politics. She was elected as the mayor of Streetsville in 1970 and held the position until 1973. In 1974, the City of Mississauga was formed after the merger of Streetsville, Port Credit, and the town of Mississauga, and Hazel McCallion was elected as the city’s third mayor in 1978.
Due to her tireless efforts to bring about change and improve the city, McCallion earned the nickname “Hurricane Hazel,” winning an unprecedented 12 consecutive municipal elections. Her leadership led to Mississauga’s population growth while maintaining the city’s debt-free status.
McCallion published her autobiography, “Hurricane Hazel – A Life with Purpose,” in 2014, and since leaving office at the end of her term, she has held positions as Special Advisor to the University of Toronto Mississauga and the first Chancellor of Sheridan College.
