After completing his education, Ueda became an assistant professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia in Canada. He later served as an economics professor at Osaka University for seven years and University of Tokyo for 28 years (from 1989 to 2017).

From 1985 to 1987, he was a senior economist at the research institute on monetary and fiscal policy at Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Moreover, the external board member of DBJ (Development Bank of Japan Inc) has been a special advisor to the research institute on monetary policy of The Bank of Japan since October 2008.
